Welcome to Penzance

Hello.
This website is an attempt to document the output of Sentinel Records, the Newlyn-based independent label set up by Job Morris in 1970. Information on the web concerning the label is scant; the discography I've compiled here, while incomplete, is as close as I can get to a complete listing of the label's releases. I'm hoping to add further information to the discographies as I find it, and also include reviews of Sentinel's more folk/pop-oriented releases, as well as document -hopefully- a little about the label's history. If you have any information about Joby or his studio set-ups in either Newlyn or Paul, feel free to get in touch!

I was born and raised in Newlyn, and as a pre-teen music fan in the 1970s, I would often encounter these albums in the racks of Chy-An-Stylus, Whites of Alverton or the West Penwith Music Shop. They didn't hold much appeal back then, but I now see them as a real connection to my past.

Here's the discography. Additions & corrections most welcome!

  1. Hi, would you happen to have SEN LPP 509: Binder Twine - Live at the Grampus available to d/load in mp3 format? Arthur Harris, a member of the band passed away at the weekend, and daughter is frantically trying to arrange a CD for his funeral.

    1. Hi,
I'm so sorry to hear of Arthur's passing, and wish I could help with the MP3s, but sadly I don't have this one. There's a copy for sale here, if you have time to convert it....

  3. Will try that again...

I thought you may be interested in the following:

SEN.P.003: Penryn Infant School EP (33 rpm 7" released in 1972 by the Private Record Division of Sentinel).

I've recently uploaded the details (and label scans) to Discogs:

  4. It's an excellent artifact from that place and time. The audio quality isn't studio standard, but like other Sentinel releases of the period (like 'The Season's Best' by the Climax and Mabe choirs) it captures (or so I assume) an authentic sound in situ. I was actually a pupil at that school, but this was recorded the year after I left. However, I do remember many of these songs being 'written' in class.

    1. fascinating. The main appeal of most of these records I'm writing about is the evocation of time & place, rather than any musical merit.
I'd love to hear the record, and upload it here to share. If there's any chance you could send me MP3s they'd be much appreciated. There's not much chance of my finding a copy; the only reference on the web that I can find is your discogs entry...
So I've also added it to the discography here.

  5. There's a 'missing' Sentinel private single listed at http://www.ibew.org.uk/misc26b.htm . The reference only gives one side, 'The H.I.P.P.O.POTAMUS SONG'; it's by the Bude Town Band & The East Penge Taphouse Quartet, and its number is SENP-006. Sounds fascinating...

    2. Hi. Found a copy of this today.... It's great! The A side is a version of "The Hippopotamus Song" (ie.mud, glorious mud) by The Bude Town Band and sung by Geoffrey Savage.
But the B side is fantastic. "A Pseaside Psalm" sung by vocal group The East Penge Taphouse Quartet is basically a song adapted from a council beach safety pamphlet.
7" is housed in a neat gatefold sleeve and it was released to promoted the building of a heated indoor swimming pool in Bude. Cat Senp006. Def my favourite Sentinel release so far! :-)

  6. I discovered your blog when searching for some information about Sentinel Records as in the LP's I have from my later Father's collection, there is a copy of "Music from Truro Cathedral" SEN 1029. I would be happy to forward copies of the covers and MP3 files of the tracks if you were interested in making this historic material available through your blog site. I couldn't find an email contact for you so if you wish to reply, my ema1l is irdesigns(at)vision(dot)net(dot)au.

  14. Hi, just some info you may be interested in.
I first encountered Job Morris when my group the Raymon Hale Singers, were invited to sing "Aquarius" for the compilation album "Sounds Like North Cornwall" Sens 1011, which was recorded at the Grenville Hotel in Bude in 1972.
We were then invited to record our own complete LP at the Pencubitt Hotel Liskeard the same year, called "Sounds Easy" Sens 1014
We were at the time a close harmony male voice group which I called. RAYMON HALE (being an anagram of Male Harmony --almost, I dropped an M). We later incorporated female voices to add more colour tone to the arrangements of maestro Johnny Green. In 1981we journeyed down to Paul to record " I Can Dream" Sens 1049. I still have a few copies if anyone is interested.
